Living Dead in Dallas

Living Dead in Dallas has an interesting structure. There are two basic plots, an A plot and a B plot. But instead of being interwoven, they get chopped up. The first two chapters deal with the first half of the B plot. This is then completely forgotten as the A plot takes over most of the book. After the A plot wraps up, we get a few chapters to segue back into the B plot and tie off some loose ends. I guess it works? It feels a little disjointed, though.

In the main plot, Sookie is off to Dallas to try and discover the whereabouts of a missing vampire named Farrel. It turns out he has been kidnapped by the Fellowship of the Sun church who want to sacrifice him in order to show their congregation the power of Jesus. Another vampire, Godfrey, is in cahoots with the church. He wants to die, to atone for his sins. Apparently he believes that God will even forgive 1000 years of child molestation and murder if he just asks Him to. I guess, technically, that is how it works.

During a reconnaissance mission, the church kidnaps Sookie and throws her in a dungeon. But Godfrey saves her and there's an exciting escape scene with werewolves and a werebat! The vampires save Farrel, Godfrey "meets the sun", and they have a big party. Then the Fellowship of the Sun attacks and Eric shields Sookie from the bullets in an attempt to manipulate her into sucking on his chest. Eric's kind of a jerk in this book. But I still like him better than Bill. I think Sookie should end up with Sam in the end, since they can actually have kids and grow old together and those are things she wants. But she should have a hot affair with Eric before that. (which she does)

Then Sookie and Bill get in a big fight because Bill (the vampire) killed someone. Sookie heads home in a huff and refuses to speak to Bill for three weeks.

Over in the B plot, there's a maenad demanding tribute from the various bars in the area (Fangtasia and Merlotte's). Unfortunately the tribute they pay isn't enough to get her to leave. Meanwhile, Lafayette has been murdered. It looks like Andy Bellefleur is guilty, but Sookie is determined to prove his innocence. By attending an orgy. I swear it makes sense in the book. Somehow.

Once again, Bill is AWOL, leaving Sookie to call on Eric for help. He obliges and, at her request, shows up dressed like a drag queen. They discover that the coroner and his wife killed Lafayette, and that Sam has been having lots and lots of sex with the maenad. They let the maenad kill the people who killed Lafayette and send her packing. Tara and her drunk, manipulative boyfriend Benedict "Eggs" go home. Tara's determined to dump Eggs in the morning because he made her go to the orgy, but then Eric erases her memory. So we'll just have to wait for that relationship to end. Sookie and Bill make amends and head home to have lots of wild sex.

Somehow, the second season of True Blood is even more ridiculous than this.

But it's all a lot of fun. And, really, that's what these books are about. Fun with supernatural creatures.
